Jakal is an improvised collaboration between reeds-wailer Keefe Jackson (Fast Citizens, Jason Adasiewicz), infinitely-brachiated percussionist Julian Kirshner (Matt Piet), and anti-cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm (Joe McPhee, Peter Brötzmann) that started in 2014. The cassette release Static Adieu (2016, 1980 Records) features the trio, along with guest Michaël Attias, at its receptive nexus: signaling, receiving, and storing vibrations in accord with each other. Peter Margasak's impressions: 'some of the best improvised work I've heard in a while from both Jackson and Lonberg-Holm…but the K [for Kirshner] in Jakal (formerly known as J@K@L) is what makes this trio something special.' Other live releases include After a Few Days (2018, Jaki Records) and If Honor And Wisdom And Happiness Are Not For Me, Let Them Be For Others (2015, Gilded Records).

Hectic and somber, the trio removes the recording process away from the recording studio and into Chicago's 4 a.m. bars, perplexing the stumbling masses with their tonal olympics. They perform feats never seen before: Jakal flies across the surfaces of their instruments and coalesces in the air as a cathartic reveille. Bountiful and confounding, there are no longer genres being broken but forms of play and collaboration. Their new album Peroration (recorded live at Elastic in Chicago) comes out in August 2023 on Amalgam Records.
