“A great CD. Piet’s playing shows a lot of musical intelligence and good sense of spontaneous compositional thinking.” - Marilyn Crispell, pianist
My solo record silent moves, unseen is my first attempt at presenting my improvised solo piano concept. It was recorded in a two-hour session at my home studio, an improvised session that yielded 22 discrete improvisations. Of these, 13 were selected to make up the record presented here. All of the tracks exemplify my approach to “instant composition” alone at the piano. In many cases, I am attempting to develop larger developmental statements from initially small fragments operating outside of tonality or meter. Other tracks are decidedly tonal or modal in construction, an attempt to reach an ecstatic state through reinforced sympathetic vibrations over a drone. Overall, this is a document of my current state of conference with the piano. Alone at the keyboard, so many things are possible. This record is just a small example of those possibilities. More solo outings are sure to follow, and further elucidate my process as an improvising pianist.
- Matt Piet
